Finding the best sunglasses to suit you is tricky. The good news is, 2021’s eyewear trends incorporate a wide range of styles.

Maybe you’re seeking sunglasses that offer drama… or perhaps you prefer a classic Wayfarer shape? The LA girls are loving sculptural, angular styles right now. Sharp designs from Linda Farrow’s collaboration with cult Milanese brand The Attico have recently been worn by Hailey Bieber, who posted a stream of sunny snaps wearing the simple Gigi and khaki-green Marfa sunnies.

Elsewhere, Rihanna is the best ambassador for shades from her own Fenty line, but still makes time for vintage frames from Versace, Gucci and Chanel. Her fellow vintage-obsessive Bella Hadid has snapped up ’90s-inspired specs from Chanel, Gucci and Cartier.

At the spring/summer 2021 shows, Versace presented a contemporary twist on aviators, while at Miu Miu, rectangular frames came in paintbox colours. At Bottega Veneta’s private salon show, meanwhile, Daniel Lee threw the brand’s considerable weight behind Princess Anne-worthy shield sunnies, and Gucci looked to the ’70s for its statement oversized styles.

Here, British Vogue highlights the key sunglasses trends for summer 2021.

Timeless aviators

Versace’s fully-charged spring/summer 2021 show was set against the backdrop of faux Atlantis-inspired ruins awash with summer-ready clothes and accessories. Amidst the commotion of Donatella’s splashy showcase, she presented a handful of fresh sunglasses shapes that nodded to classic aviators. Think: scuba mask-meets-Top Gun.

Oliver Peoples x The Row sunglasses, £384, available at Oliverpeoples.com; Cartier Eyewear aviators, £685, available at Matchesfashion.com; Ray-Ban sunglasses, £176, available at Selfridges.com; Celine aviators, £330, available at Net-a-porter.com; Michael Kors sunglasses, £170, available at Michaelkors.co.uk.

Understated slimline specs

Remember micro specs? This season’s slimline frames have been scaled-up slightly, meaning that they’re large enough to actually protect your eyes from UV rays rather than perch on your nose à la teeny sunnies.

Jacquemus “Les Lunettes” sunglasses, £310, available at Biffi.com; Sun Buddies “Miuccia” sunglasses, £125, available at Goodhoodstore.com; Akila Verve sunglasses, £99, available at Endclothing.com; Aperçu sunglasses, £138, available at Apercueyewear.com; Hot Futures smoke lens sunglasses, £85, available at Hotfutures.co.uk.

Retro cat-eye shades

Embrace your inner ’50s muse and take cat-eye shades for a spin this summer. Valentino, Stella McCartney and Coach all had their takes on the retro style for spring/summer 2021, each injecting a contemporary twist to the retro shape.

Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses, £450, available at Matchesfashion.com; Le Specs sunglasses, £75, available at Matchesfashion.com; Alexander McQueen cat-eye sunglasses, £190, available at Alexandermcqueen.com; Versace Medusa sunglasses, £210, available at Brownsfashion.com; Finlay & Co tortoiseshell sunglasses, £150, available at Finlayandco.com.

Oversized sunglasses in an array of colourful tints have become a trademark of Alessandro Michele’s Gucci, and were seen most recently at his spring/summer 2021 showcase.

Sleek half-moons

D-frame sunnies – or half-moons, as they’re sometimes referred to – are made for people who aren’t quite ready to take Princess Margaret-esque shield frames for a spin (see: final slide). Fendi featured various high-shine styles at SS21, presenting statement shapes that started in line with the brow and ended below the nose.

Celine Eyewear D-frame sunglasses, £330, available at Matchesfashion.com; Victoria Beckham flat-brow sunglasses, £231, available at Mytheresa.com; Loewe flat-top sunglasses, £260, available at Matchesfashion.com; Saint Laurent shield sunglasses, £315, available at Farfetch.com; Bottega Veneta D-frame acetate sunglasses, £240, available at Matchesfashion.com.

Angular chic

Angular sunglasses are universally flattering. Seen at Miu Miu and Ami, and positioned in models’ pockets at Jacquemus’s spring/summer 2021 wheat field showcase, they’re a style that you can wear right through until autumn (and beyond).

Dmy by Dmy rectangular sunglasses, £140, available at Dmybydmy.com; Coach rectangle sunglasses, £150, available at Coach.com; Han Kjobenhavn acetate sunglasses, £125, available at Libertylondon.com; Illesteva sunglasses, £160, available at Illesteva.com; Linda Farrow x The Attico frame sunglasses, £205, available at Matchesfashion.com.

Futuristic shield shades

Sunny snaps of Princess Margaret holidaying in Sardinia, captured by inimitable American photographer Slim Aarons, are enough to convince anyone to try shield sunglasses this summer. Look to Daniel Lee’s Bottega Veneta salon show for styling inspiration.

Loewe shield sunglasses, £350, available at Matchesfashion.com; Bottega Veneta shield sunglasses, £355, available at Bottegaveneta.com; Saint Laurent shield sunglasses, £295, available at Matchesfashion.com; Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini shield sunglasses, £195, available at Philosophyofficial.com; Tom Ford sunglasses, £292, available at Ssense.com.
